Direct imaging of black hole event horizons ideally requires Earth-sized telescopes. Although Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) can achieve this through aperture synthesis, it is extremely challenging to accurately calibrate and form coherent images from data obtained from telescopes spanning Earth-sized separations. I will talk about our group’s independent approach on using novel interferometric ideas and Deep Learning to robustly reconstruct images from such challenging data.
