If you have a question about this talk, please contact Oliver Knight. Self-harm is a common problem among young people and is a serious health concern. Research shows that young people who self-harm are more likely to have mental health difficulties in later life and are at a higher risk of suicide. The majority of young people who self-harm do not seek any formal or informal support, as they are often unsure who to speak to, and try to cope with their problems alone or believe that no one can help. School staff may be the first adults to notice a young person’s self-harm and are well placed to provide their students with support. However, many school staff report that they often do not feel equipped or confident to respond to students who are self-harming. In response to this, we have developed an online training programme and resource toolkit for schools to respond to self-harm called SORTS (Supportive response to self-harm). The training takes a whole school approach and is aimed at all school staff including those in non-teaching roles. We will present the coproduction work involved in developing the resource, as well as preliminary qualitative findings regarding school staff and young people’s perspectives about schools responding to self-harm.
