The Vedi River Valley of Armenia provides an ideal opportunity for researching diachronic human-landscape relations within a mountain-plain intersection. Since 2022, we have excavated the Vedi Fortress, a prominent site that defends the entrance to the Valley along the southeastern edge of the Ararat Plain. Results of this excavation plus extensive surface survey suggest that a new polity developed in the Valley during the Late Bronze Age (ca 1550-1200 BCE ) by fortifying the Valley at multiple sites. The Vedi Fortress was burned at 800 BCE , but was later refortified during the Late Antique (Early Medieval) period (ca 450-650 CE) when Armenia came under Sasanian rule during the Marzpan system.
