With modern laser spectroscopy and velocity imaging techniques, the fundamental mechanisms of chemical reactions in the gas phase can now be studied in considerable detail. This talk will review how the shapes and structures of polyatomic molecules influence the dynamics of reactive collisions. Much important chemistry occurs in liquid solutions, however, and the presence of solvent will change the reaction dynamics. Recent progress in the study of reactions in solution using ultrafast laser methods allows us to contrast the gas and condensed phase dynamics of selected reactions, and thereby to probe the effects of the solvent on chemical mechanisms.
