The first ‘female king’ of her kingdom, Ndongo in west-central Africa, she led a sixty-year resistance against the Portuguese who tried to conquer it. Her story has recently been turned into a Netflix docu-drama series by Jada Pinkett Smith. Luke Pepera, one of its main contributors, speaks about Njinga’s life, legacy, and how African history is inspiring a new wave of stories. Luke Pepera is a writer, broadcaster, anthropologist, and historian, specialising in African history. He was born in Ghana and studied Archaeology & Anthropology at Oxford. He’s written articles, presented documentaries, and appeared on numerous podcasts. Currently, he’s working on his first book, Motherland: 500,000 Years of African History, Cultures, and Identity, to be published in 2024 by Weidenfeld & Nicolson.
