Abstract
To mark the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Lucy Fellow Dr Shona Wilson will be speaking about her research. Schistosomiasis is a debilitating, sometimes fatal, parasitic worm infection that chronically afflicts some 200 million people in many of the worldβs poorest countries. Effective drug treatment is available, but in schistosomiasis endemic areas, reinfection occurs rapidly after treatment, especially in children. Dr Wilson works in collaboration with research groups in Tanzania and Uganda to analyse the relationships between environmental factors and age-dependent immunity and to understand the IgE mediated responses essential to combating the major parasitic and allergy-related health challenges in both the developed and developing world.
