Research conducted over the last two decades has identified financialisation as a defining feature of the global political economy in the neoliberal era. The growing power of financial actors to shape the behaviour of non-financial firms; the reconceptualization of the firm as a bundle of assets; and an increasing focus on exploiting intangible assets, in particular intellectual property rights, has led to what many deem to be a new era of “rentier capitalism”.

This seminar will present work discussing the applicability of these concepts and exploring how financial and institutional contexts shape the business strategies of diagnostics firms and ‘big pharma’ on either side of the Atlantic.
