The most extreme galaxies in the Universe are hard to find. Completely missing from older observations (and not even discovered until the late 1990s), I will discuss the scientific detective story which led to the unveiling of a whole new population of the most explosively of a whole new population of the most explosively powerful galaxies ever seen – the monsters in the dark.
