‘Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past’, George Orwell wrote in Nineteen Eighty-Four. The maxim is more true for Putin’s Russia than for any other country in the world. This talk will explore how Putin’s mythic reading of Russian history has informed his ruling ideology.
