You already know how Amazon, Google, and AirBnB operate They are all platform businesses. They know they can go beyond their industry segments. They capitalize on wider ecosystems that strengthen their offering and expand commercial opportunities. In this lecture, you will learn how traditional businesses can do the same.

The lecture will lead you through the seven steps you can take to turn your business into a successful platform. Learn to harness emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, cement your business into thriving ecosystems and go beyond industry boundaries. Uncover how business leaders at companies as diverse as John Deere, KONE , and Hilti are leading their businesses to the future by reinventing their business model. The lecture will address the following questions:

  • Why you should pursue platform opportunities – i.e. how platforms are changing industries, creating major threats and opportunities for industry incumbents and new players
  • What are the hard strategic and technological choices you need to make to create a successful platform – i.e. what is the economic and technological logic behind platform growth and success. How you can leverage network effects, APIs, and artificial intelligence to build competitive advantage and customer value?
  • How you should pace your actions over time – you cannot become a leading platform overnight, but you need to take actions in an appropriate sequence to create your success.
  • How you can manage the psychological challenges of becoming a platform company – Transforming into a platform creates major emotional and psychological challenges for top leaders and other members of the organization. These challenges can cause erroneous decisions and resistance. With the right approach, you can overcome these challenges and turn fear into positive energy

Tero Ojanperä is a global technology business and innovation leader. He has versatile abilities and background at the intersection of technology, business, and creativity. He is chairman and co-founder of Silo AI, the largest private AI lab in the Nordics, and Professor of Practise, Intelligent Platforms, Aalto University, Finland. Tero is an author of Platform Strategy: Transform Your Business with AI, Platforms and Human Intelligence. Previously, he was Nokia’s CTO and Chief Strategy Officer and served on the Nokia Executive Board.

Tero serves as the chairman of Fintraffic, a state-owned traffic control and management company, and Betolar, a pioneering materials technology company fighting climate change. He also serves as a member of the board of OP Financial Group, the largest retail bank in Finland, and Siili Solutions Plc.

Tero was nominated as Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum 2006. He has been recognized as 7th Most Creative People In Business 2009 by Fast Company. In his spare time, he enjoys Olympic weightlifting, boating, triathlon, and skiing
