This talk will give an overview of the development of biological medicines with a focus on monoclonal antibody R&D from 25 years ago to the present. This will include consideration of the importance of measurement and resultant understanding of the complex systems used for manufacturing biologic drugs so that they ultimately can benefit patients. The talk will be from an industrial scientist’s from both a Biotech. and “Big Pharma” perspective. It will consider the importance of vision with “the end in mind” to drive the science and innovation that has enabled the huge success of this class of medicine. Looking to the future the talk will also touch on the response to the pandemic and how that has the potential to transform development in the future.
