Effects such as piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, photogalvanic effect, etc. occurs spontaneously only in materials with broken symmetry. We will show here that similar effects can be induced in centrosymmetric materials by lowering the innate symmetry using elastic and electric fields. This offers new avenues for developing new devices, such as pyroelectric semiconductors, that are largely forbidden by the native materials.
