The stethoscope was invented over 200 years ago but its acoustics are still not fully understood. In this talk I will outline a new approach to modelling the stethoscope, based on understanding the coupling between the stethoscope and the chest. At the dawn of the age of automated diagnosis, this model allows us to interpret the signals we are recording and improve the design of future stethoscopes.
