Before colonialism Pacific people didn’t gamble, but now they have taken to it in a big way. My research investigates this transformation and what it tells us about how non-capitalist economies work, how capitalism takes hold, and how economic ideas can be transformed through transmission. My talk will describe how gambling took off and what it looks like today.
