Angel Trains was created in 1994 as one of three rolling stock companies (“ROSCOs”) in preparation for the privatisation of the rail industry. It now leases nearly 4500 vehicles with a value of nearly £3.5Bn to 20 operating companies. One of the companies working with Angel Trains, Chiltern Railways, wanted to run hybrid diesel and battery-powered trains to improve reliability and shorten journey times on routes that may never be electrified because of rising costs. Our speaker Euan Smith, will describe the engineering project to develop the hybrid trains and provide an overview of the deliverables and improvements that have been achieved.

Euan Smith is currently Head of Product Management at Angel Trains having previously been Head of Fleet. Starting as an Engineering Management Trainee at British Rail, he has also worked for Scot Rail in several technical roles. He has chaired rail safety board committees and given talks on trains and the role of train leasing companies.
