Child mental health in the school context; why it is important and what we might do about it

This talk will discuss the impact of poor mental health in children on the education system with some discussion of how the most common problems might be managed. The talk will draw on evidence from the national survey programme and other epidemiological datasets as well as the STARS cluster randomised controlled trial and Review of ADHD Interventions in Schools.

PROFILE Tamsin Ford is a Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Exeter Medical School. She is an epidemiologist, and her academic work focuses on the effectiveness of interventions and the efficiency of services in relation to the mental health of children and young people, with a particular focus on the interface between the education and health systems. She completed her PhD at the Institute of Psychiatry and moved to Exeter in 2007, where she set up and leads the Child Mental Health Research Group. She is also an honorary consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at Devon Partnership Trust.
