Farming for Ecosystem Services: A New Paradigm for Intensive Agriculture

Intensive agriculture as conventionally practiced is characterized by high yields and substantial environmental harm. The emergence of potential markets for ecosystem services offers a way to incentivize outputs other than yield but requires an integrated approach and an ecological understanding that considers various trade-offs. Research in the US Midwest shows how farmers might provide ecosystem services such as climate change mitigation.
