The Monster hunter series has been running for quite some time. Anyone who has played and enjoyed any of the games in this series can understand why. Great character and monster design, Tons of weapons and items, and great multiplayer play kept this game series going and now its made it to PSP .

Gameplay

In this game youre a monster hunter. you go out into different parts of the world and hunt down different monsters. the best part of this game is that you dont have to hunt alone. You start out with Character Creation. you can customize your characters sex, Face, skin color, Hair, hair color, and voice. there are about 20 of each so making an origional character is really easy. Once you’ve done that you start in your house where you can sleep, equip weapons and armor, store weapons and save. the village you live in has many places to shop, there s an weapons and armor shop and a weapons and armor smith where you can take Mined minerals and monster bones, skin, claws, and teeth and make weapons and armor. This is a huge part of the game. you can make better weapons and armor than what is sold at the weapon/armor shop. doing this will make surviving battles with the HUGE monsters easier. Once you’ve taken a quest and left the village youre out in the world. There are many places you can go like forests, jungles, deserts, volcanos and many more locales. From your base camp you go and hunt monsters which are huge as they are various. some monsters you hunt run to different areas and you have to chase them down to kill them. more agressive monsters come and find you, and some attack in packs. These different reactions make hunting more interesting. once you take down a beast you can whip out your knife and get meat, skin, bones, and teeth from the monsters, sometimes you can get the contents of their stomachs.

Difficulty

This game can get difficult. but its the challenge of taking down something that fights back that adds to the fun of this game. there are points where you can get in really deep and die, which costs money but if you play smart you can avoid alot of problems. some monster are just too big to take yourself- at least if youre just starting. Also as in any game you have to learn how to efficiently use your weapons which can be difficult but would be boring if it was easy.

Graphics

Just like its older PS2 sibling the handheld version is just as visually impressive. The stages are beautiful and detailed. one stage that comes to my mind when thinking about how stunning the graphics are would be the jungle. The base camp has a backdrop with waterfalls in the distance. and if you look closely you can see that the water at those falls even though in the distance is falling. This attention to detail really adds to this games appeal.

Sound The sound for this game is really good. It does afterall have Dolby Pro Logic II support. Sound is detailed down to the sound of breathing, your characters armor when you move (which can give away your location to monsters you try to sneak up on – and you can sneak) to the sound of monsters foot steps, wing flaps, and roars. The Music is amazing and the ambience (natural sounds) are also great.

Adhoc Mode

After getting my copy and showing it to some of my friends I was able to get people to play with. Using adhoc you and three other hunters can go on quests together. This is where the game gets really fun. Taking down huge dragons and other monsters is alot more fun and alot easier if you go in at them with your friends. When you do a multiplayer mission you go to the pub and check the quest board (earlier another player will select a quest and post the quest on the board)

Replay Value:

With all of the monsters, hundreds of items, weapons, armor, and multiplayer, this game has almost unlimited replay value and if that werent enough Monster hunter Dos is being released next febuary and you can connect to it using usb mode. after connecting you can download more missions monsters and probably more weapons armor and items. with innovations like this I definately see Monster Hunter P having a sequel and making it to PS3 . For those of you who like MMORPGS with killer graphics This game is for you.

NOTE : It appears that unlike the Japanese version the american version of the game will not support infastructure mode. I’ll post up more information when its available.
