In the first I will review some of the early significant explorations. These grew out of concerns about curricula developments which were leaving some students behind. My own research contribution has followed the anthropological approach. However, secondly, looking forwards will necessarily involve new ideas from both theory and practices. So finally, I shall explore the possibilities offered by some radical teaching and learning approaches. This talk is part of the Mathematics Education Research Group (MERG) series.
