The talk will first describe a sophisticated nuclear fuel irradiation experiment in which the behaviours of several novel fuel ceramics are studied as they ‘burn-up’ in simluated power reactor conditions. There will be a description of the business basis for the work, and also how the project managed to get off the ground. A number of project risks and ongoing commercial-isation challenges will be discusssed. Comment will be made on various serious and inherent difficulties faced by those seeking to develop innovative technologies in the nuclear fuel sector.
