Ursula Buchan explores the life of her grandfather – novelist, poet, historian, journalist, literary critic, barrister, colonial administrator, propagandist, politician, statesman – who was born into a Scottish Free Kirk manse but given a state funeral after he died, and is best known for a thriller he wrote for his amusement in six weeks, when ill in bed.
