Electronic prescribing has been shown to reduce medication errors in hospitals in the USA , however does it ‘work’ in the UK? We present an evaluation of an electronic prescribing system linked to electronically controlled access to medicines and bar code patient identity checking. This work is the template for future Department of Health evaluations of electronic prescribing systems.
