A series of specially-commissioned 50-minute lectures to celebrate the first 50 years of Wolfson College. In the series, eleven distinguished members of the college reflect on developments in their fields of expertise in the half-century since Wolfson was founded.

About the Lecturer

Peter Weissberg is a Fellow of Wolfson and Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation. He is also Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Birmingham, UK in 1976 and trained as a clinical cardiologist before being appointed lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine in the University of Birmingham. Following a two-year appointment as Medical Research Council Travelling Fellow to the Baker Medical Research Institute and Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, he was appointed to a British Heart Foundation Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Cambridge. In 1994 he was appointed as the first British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in the University of Cambridge. His research interests have focused on vascular biology and, in particular, the cell and molecular biology of vascular smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis. His group has developed clinical imaging techniques to characterise atherosclerotic plaque composition in patients at risk of stroke. In 2004 he became Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation, which currently distributes over £100m annually for cardiovascular research, prevention and care in the UK.

About the Lecture

50 years ago the UK, like much of the western world, was in the grip of an epidemic of coronary heart disease. Much has changed between then and now. How was this achieved and how much further have we still to go?
