Star formation in molecular clouds extracted from galaxy simulations: The effect of galactic flows

In recent years many simulations have explored the star formation process in molecular clouds. However, most of them use turbulent spheres/boxes, or colliding flows as initial conditions. These setups lack the complexity of the galactic conditions where the real clouds are created. We extract our clouds from galactic-scale simulations, increase their resolution, and resimulate them. We compare our galactic clouds with turbulent spheres. Our work indicates that different kinematic properties inherited from the galactic simulations have an impact on the star formation rate (even without implementing any feedback in the models). And therefore the inherited velocity flows in a particular molecular cloud may be important in defining its star formation history.
