As the Irish language becomes central to the culture wars dominating political discourse in the North of Ireland, Belfast has emerged as a leading force in the Irish revival movement across the Island of Ireland. This seminar is a reflection of five weeks of fieldwork in West Belfast working with Forbairt Feirste, a non-profit focused on the social, economic, and cultural development of Belfast through the creation and maintenance of Irish language medium resources. The seminar will address the intersections of grassroots and governmental heritage initiatives, the role of cultural policy in post-conflict recovery, and the impact of cultural infrastructure within divided communities using Belfast’s Irish language ecosystem as a case study.
