Planets in a different light: a multi-wavelength approach to atmosphere characterisation

To obtain the most information about exoplanet atmospheres it is important to use the fullest extent of the available wavelength range. For example, direct imaging is a tried and tested method of detecting exoplanets in the near infrared, but has not been extended to longer wavelengths from the ground, despite these wavelengths offering a treasure trove of information and the fact that large ground-based telescopes are capable of routinely producing diffraction limited images at these wavelengths. At the same time, characterisation can also be done with transmission spectroscopy and JWST is opening up new possibilities in both the near and mid infrared. However, these observations can be hard to interpret without optical data for reference. In this talk I will discuss the possibilities of ground-based mid-IR direct imaging and the benefits of optical wavelengths to complement JWST transmission spectrum results to show the benefits of broad wavelength coverage.
