A series of major research programmes in Education over the past decade have set themselves the task of ‘building research capacity’. However, this has been understood in different ways and as a result different kinds of activities, training and online support have been provided for early career researchers and those engaged in supporting them. In this seminar, Patrick Carmichael, who has worked with on a number of these initiatives, describes some of the challenges faced and the opportunities provided by new web-based tools for the development of sustainable research communities.
