Gaia-ESO is a large public spectroscopic survey performed with the instrument FLAMES on the ESO VLT . With its 340 observing nights, Gaia-ESO remains so far the largest stellar spectroscopic programme carried-out on a 8m-class telescope. The project started ten years ago and is very close to completion.
In this talk I will review the Survey motivation, strategy and implementation, present science highlights, and discuss the legacy aspects.
