If you have a question about this talk, please contact Dr Alexandra Huener. Impulse-Maxwell-NanoDTC-Innovation Seminar Series We are delighted to host Mario de Miguel Ramos and Teona Mirea from Sorex Sensors as speakers in our monthly Innovation Seminar Series. Sorex Sensors is a spin-out of the University Of Cambridge, the University of Warwick and the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) founded in 2017. The company focuses on the development of highly sensitive mass sensors based on Film Bulk Acoustic Wave Resonators (FBARs). The FBAR when put in resonance can detect changes in mass down to the femto-gram range—able to detect a single virus or complex molecules. The sensor MEMS production has been transferred into an 8-inch foundry and the company has started to gain commercial traction in a number of interesting high growth market verticals including atomic layer deposition (ALD) systems, vehicle emission testing, air quality sensing and fresh produce transportation and storage. In this seminar we will talk about the history of the company, how it was started and how can 6 academics from 3 different universities and 2 different countries join together to set up a spin-out company. We will also discuss the challenges of having such a small team working in different locations successfully, handling different projects together. About the Speakers DR MARIO DE MIGUEL RAMOS Dr Mario de Miguel Ramos is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sorex Sensors Ltd, a spin out of the University Of Cambridge, the University of Warwick and the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) founded in 2017. The company focuses on the development of highly-sensitive mass sensors based on Film Bulk Acoustic Wave Resonators (FBARs) for thin film monitoring, particulate sensing and gas sensing applications. He has been working in the field of FBA Rs since 2011, first in the Group of Microsystems and Electronic Materials (GMME-CEMDATIC) in the UPM and since 2015 in the Electronic Devices and Materials (EDM) group of the Engineering Department in the University Of Cambridge as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. He received his MEng in Telecommunications Engineering by UPM in 2012 and his PhD in Electronic Engineering Systems by the same university in January 2016. His dissertation received the highest qualification, Outstanding Cum Laude unanimously. He has participated in several national and European projects involving a wide range of topics related to FBA Rs for gas and liquid sensing applications, including the optimisation of piezoelectric and non-piezoelectric thin films, microwave and sensor design, functionalisation and sensing. DR TEONA MIREA Dr. Teona Mirea is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Sorex Sensors Ltd (Cambridge, UK) and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) (Spain). She was born in Transilvania (Romania) in 1989 and moved to Madrid in 1998. She received her MEng degree in Telecommunications Engineering in 2013 by UPM and her PhD degree in Electronic Engineering Systems, by the same university, in 2017. Her expertise includes the design and fabrication of microacoustic resonators, particularly for chemical, physical and biological sensing applications, and the development of different electronic materials including carbon nanotubes. She has participated in several national and European projects related to these topics. Her thesis entitled “Thin Film Electroacoustic resonators for physical and chemical sensing” was awarded with the Cum Laude distinction and the Extraordinary Doctorate Award by UPM . During her PhD she also received the student poster award by the European Frequency and Time Forum conference in 2016. She has performed short stays abroad at Uppsala University (Sweden) in 2014 and at Cambridge University (UK) in 2015. About the Seminar Series This series of seminars happens monthly and speakers will present their ideas and experiences on how innovation impacts their endeavours. We have a varied list of speakers, from academics turned in to entrepreneurs all the way to established companies. The format is a 45 minute talk, followed by Q&A, and drinks and nibbles immediately after. Attendance is free but spaces are limited so do register today. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/innovation-seminar-series-sorex-sensors-tickets-59047428448 We look forward to welcoming you.
