Artificial intelligence is now widely touted as a potentially massive threat to humanity, with images of a Terminator-style future. But is such genuinely independent intelligent technology possible? And, even if it is, is the actual threat more likely to be indirect: by way of the industrial and ecological effects of bringing that technology into being? Philosopher Dr. Rupert Read will argue that the real crisis facing us is one of our breaching the limits of our planet – and that our obsession with high-tech will accelerate that breaching
