Come along to the CUWCS talk given by Andrew Balmford on “Feeding the world without costing the earth” Meeting food demand at least cost to wild species and the benefits they provide us is one of this century’s greatest challenges. Is it better to adopt wildlife-friendly on-farm practices (land sharing), or to maximise farm yields and spare other land for conservation (land sparing), or something in between? His talk will describe a model for evaluating these and intermediate strategies, parameterise this for five parts of the world and several different taxa, extend the analysis to consider the impact of land sparing on greenhouse gas emissions, and begin to explore policy mechanisms for those land-use strategies which hold most promise for nature.
