Decades of foundational research on social cognition and circumscribed behaviors in autism transpired before our current, widespread recognition that anxiety and depression affect a majority of autistic individuals. A full accounting of the emotional experiences of autistic individuals may ultimately alter our definition of autism itself. This presentation reviews recent behavioral, neuroimaging, and psychophysiological findings on mechanistic links among autism, anxiety, and depression. It also integrates decades-old literatures on emotion with current, highly active conversations about the importance of mental health concerns within the autistic community.
