DESCRIPTION:Decades of foundational research on social cognition and circu
mscribed behaviors in autism transpired before our current\, widespread re
cognition that anxiety and depression affect a majority of autistic indivi
duals. A full accounting of the emotional experiences of autistic individu
als may ultimately alter our definition of autism itself. This presentatio
n reviews recent behavioral\, neuroimaging\, and psychophysiological findi
ngs on mechanistic links among autism\, anxiety\, and depression. It also
integrates decades-old literatures on emotion with current\, highly active
conversations about the importance of mental health concerns within the a
 utistic community.
