As scientists, we are not only expected to do excellent research; we are also expected to have an impact on society. One way to have such an impact is through public engagement. However, the effectiveness of these activities is often not measured and the methods underpinning the activities are rarely evidence-based.

In this lecture, Erik van Sebille, Professor in Oceanography and Public Engagement at Utrecht University, will give an overview of what is known (and unknown) about the effectiveness of public engagement by academics. He will particularly focus on advocacy and activism, and discuss to what extent, when and how (climate) scientists can be activistic in the public domain.
