MHMW02 - Modern History of Mathematics: Looking Ahead This talk compares three sites of mathematical training from the turn-of-the-twentieth century to illustrate precise ways in which pedagogical environment shapes mathematical research. Like biographies, histories of mathematical places draw together social and technical practices. Unlike biographies, such studies foreground the collective work of mathematicians. While there exists important historical scholarship on this scale of analysis, extant archival records offer new directions and questions.
