DESCRIPTION:This talk compares three sites of mathematical training from t
 he turn-of-the-twentieth century to illustrate precise ways in which pedag
 ogical environment shapes mathematical research. Like biographies\, histor
 ies of mathematical places draw together social and technical practices. U
 nlike biographies\, such studies foreground the collective work of mathema
 ticians. While there exists important historical scholarship on this scale
  of analysis\, extant archival records offer new directions and questions.
