Abstract
Host Prof. David Edwards
Abstract The increasing availability of global gridded climate datasets derived from weather stations has advanced research on the links between organisms and climate. However, most organisms experience conditions that differ substantially from those measured by weather stations. This seminar will cover the methods of predicting microclimatic conditions that organisms experience and of ecological responses to climate change using a range of examples. Alongside this, novel temperature regimes will be explored in regards to underneath the world’s tropical forest canopies as species shift predictions may be wrong if climate data used do not reflect microclimatic conditions.
Biography Ilya Maclean is Professor of Global Change Biology and Associate Director of the University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute. He has worked on ecological responses to climate change since 2004. Much of this time has been spent trying to figure out how to model the microclimatic conditions experienced by organisms and what this tells us.
Please note the seminars are for University Of Cambridge members ONLY .
