‘Memory and Masculinity in the Work of Ocean Vuong’. This project is examining Ocean Vuong’s poetry collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds and novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, focusing on the dialogue between the aesthetics of memory Vuong figures in each and prevailing conceptions of contemporary American masculinity. Vuong’s aesthetics encourage the reader to notice the peculiarities in what is presumed ‘normal’ for a man in 21st century America, uncovering the violence and exclusion bound up within that notion.
