Overview: Infrastructure slopes and embankments are integral parts of the UK road and rail networks. The latter structures are also utilised as flood defences along river banks and parts of the UK coastline. The design, sustainability and long-term resilience of these structures present some major challenges to geotechnical engineers. The talk will discuss and demonstrate the role of advanced numerical analysis in addressing some of these challenges.

Biography: Lidija Zdravkovic is a Professor and Head of the Geotechnics Section at Imperial College London. Her research interests are focused on the development of numerical tools for advanced analysis of geotechnical structures. Currently she leads research projects on the analysis and design of offshore wind turbine foundations, deep nuclear waste disposal and infrastructure embankments and slopes. She teaches elements of geotechnical analysis to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She has published widely and co-authored two text books on finite element analysis in geotechnical engineering. She has received prizes for her work from the ICE and BGA and delivered the Géotechnique Lecture in 2013. Her work for industry involves projects such as Crossrail, The Shard and Gerrards Cross tunnel collapse. She has served as an elected member on the BGA Executive Committee.
