Dr Martin Roth is currently one of the most influential museum directors in the world. He has been Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum since September 2011. As a German, he is the first non-British director of the V&A and, for that matter, of any national British museum.

Dr Roth has had a distinguished career of involvement in museums, galleries, and arts research that has included a ten-year position as Director General of the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden), among the oldest and most important collections in the world. Prior to that, he was President of the German Museums Association (1995-2003), Curator at the Deutsche Historische Museum (1989-2001), and Director of the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden (1991-2000), the first German science museum. A trustee of the British Council and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Dr Roth is also a member of the Council of the Royal College of Art and the Court of Imperial College in London. In 2007, he was awarded the French ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ which recognises significant contributions to the arts.

The V&A describes itself as the ‘world’s greatest museum of art and design’, with a collection spanning 3,000 years. It encompasses architecture, ceramics, glass, fashion, jewellery, metalwork, painting, photography and more. The V&A owes its current worldwide success to the visionary concept that Dr Roth has created and implemented during his time at the museum: a model that consists in a strong focus on research, a striving for popularity and commercialisation, and the construction of an international network.

The Cambridge University German Society proudly presents Dr Martin Roth as our first speaker of Easter Term. The topic of his talk will be: ‘Total Accessibility: Challenges and Opportunities for the 21st-Century Museum’. There will also be time for questions.

Please note that the event will be held in English.

Everyone welcome! We look forward to seeing you there!
