I will explain the information theoretic analysis of DNA storage channels done by David MacKay last summer and show an alternative approach by modelling the channel as a Z-channel. I will show that the capacity formulas obtained for both channels are equivalent for when the number of DNA packets stored is small in comparison to the total number of possible DNA packets. Finally, I will speculate on how to extend this result from the current simple “noiseless” packet loss model to the noisy channel case where DNA packets may be recovered with alterations.
