On the site now occupied by the University Library, the First Eastern General Hospital (Territorial Force) treated over 70,000 military patients between 1914 and 1919, and yet its very existence has been largely forgotten. Philomena Guillebaud is the author of From Bats to Beds to Books, a history of the hospital and its site, and here looks at an interesting part of the University Library building’s pre-history.
