I will discuss some results that bound the number of automorphic forms in various families, such as cohomological automorphic forms of fixed level and growing weight on GL_2 over an imaginary quadratic field, and certain nontempered forms on U(2,1). I will explain how these results can be interpreted in terms of the cohomology of arithmetic manifolds.
