John Ramsay is celebrated as the person who, in the mid-20th century, turned structural geology from a qualitative to a quantitative science. His textbooks “Folding and fracturing of rocks” (1967) and the three-volume “The techniques of modern structural geology” (1983, 1987, 2000) are influential classics. John is also renowned as one of the best geological mappers of all time. In this talk, he will reflect on his geological career and on the role of field mapping in the 21st century. Some of his field maps will be on display. John’s talk is of particular interest to Part II students, who will have submitted their own mapping projects the previous day, but all interested in field-based geology are encouraged to come. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Graham_Ramsay
