Within the constraints of working with a fragmentary fossil record, how confident can we be of being able to sort fossils belonging to the earliest ancestors of our own lineage, Homo, from fossil evidence of contemporary and closely-related early hominin taxa? What are we looking for, and how will we know when we find it?’
