A prominent debate in the history of education asks whether colonial schools were vectors of emancipation for colonised peoples or whether they contributed to a wider system of subjugation. My aim is to defend a position that rejects this binary opposition, but does not serve as a liberal apology for the colonial project. In this presentation, I will discuss the difficulties I have encountered in developing a clear formulation and defence of this position.
