Whilst all computer scientists are aware that multicore processors are very much on the rise, many are less aware of some of the other parallel technologies which are in a modern machine. Using the rendering of the Mandelbrot set as an example, I will track the evolution of the parallel capabilities of consumer hardware, starting with Intel’s SSE , moving on to multicore and hyperthreading, and finishing with a look at modern GPGPU architectures, such as NVIDIA ’s CUDA .
