All welcome A Joint LfL: the Cambridge Network, CCE and LfL the Academic Group Seminar LfL is delighted to welcome Jonathan Jansen to Cambridge in April to talk about his experiences in South Africa as the first black dean of education and what it meant to confront deep seated racism among his students and colleagues. His book Knowledge in the Blood: Confronting Race and the Apartheid Past is a compelling account of the struggle to change his students uncompromising world view but in the process, as he tried to see the world through their eyes, coming to reframe his own understanding. It is a testimony to his humility as a leader that he was able to listen and learn from the most vitriolic of white students and keep alive the dialogue however abhorrent at times those views might be. Jonathan Jansen is Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the University of the Free State, Honorary Professor of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand and Visiting Fellow at the National Research Foundation, South Africa. He was a Fulbright Scholar to Stanford University (2007-2008), former Dean of Education at the University of Pretoria (2001-2007), and holds Honorary Doctorates from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cleveland, USA .
