During the nineteenth century mountain-tops turned into sites of scientific experiment. One of the best-known consequences was the development of new models of climate and of life on Earth. In this talk, professor Simon Schaffer explores the relation between some of these projects and the emergence of new audiences for the sciences: and in so doing reflects on the relation between scientific expertise and public debate.
