Professor Sir Tony Bottoms will look at the basic facts of social change – population/immigration, family structures, economic growth, deindustialization, trends in household income and expenditure, etc. and then discuss some theories by which sociologists are trying to make sense of what’s been happening – multiculturalism, consumerism, detraditionalization, secularisation, managerialism, the ‘market society’, ‘safe hedonism’ and ‘ontological insecurity’.
